budget + materials

It all comes down to the budget!  Relatively impressive results can be achieved from spending only a few hundred pounds and doing the work yourself - but you must have a plan of attack.  Tackle the whole look of the garden to ensure visual and functional coherence.

A normal spend (including labour costs) on a garden over 100 sqm would be between £5K and £20K depending on garden size, extent of design elements and of course the choice of materials used.  This budget would normally be proportionally spent on these 5 basic elements; approximately: materials (40%), labour (30%), tool/machine hire (15%), planting (10%) and accessories (5%).

For DIY projects the key is to shop around.  If your getting it all from your local DIY warehouse then the chances are you're paying far too much.  The internet is great for finding wholesalers, manufacturers and suppliers who can provide top quality materials at affordable costs.

It is recommended that you might do a little research into material options especially if your project will require paving, walling or decorative gravels (essential for low maintenance solutions).  Visit our linked resources page for a list of local suppliers and manufacturers and browse the products on offer and note the prices indicated.
