Gardens make great play areas for kids but at the same time provide an ideal entertainment space for adults. Decide on a list of priorities and plan your garden accordingly. 

Crucial child-safety considerations include: differing heights and levels; safe surface materials (without sharp edges); secure gates and fencing; toxicity of planting; and use of water or electricity.  It is also important to include ample play space in the form of a lawn or a play area. 

If possible you should seek to include an educational planting area which would attract wildlife and teach children about nature.

Design considerations for adults within a family garden include: frequent entertaining numbers; how long you intend to spend in your garden; your own design influences and aspirations; pets and utility  requirements; and budget.
