A "tidy-up" is an industry term for those one-off clearances or 'rip-outs' of overgrown, neglected or newly acquired bits of rough land.

All of the dead growth needs to be removed, the hedges and shrubs need to be pruned and mended back into shape, the beds need weeding and all the rubbish needs binned.  The idea is that once the space is tidied up you are getting back to the bones of the garden; to a point where you can approach the area with a design solution to make the most out of your garden space.

You'll need all the tools in your shed and some serious protective clothing.  Beware broken glass, rusty railings and prickly bushes!  If you've got the patience you could collect all the waste and burn it in a furnace bin or bonfire.  Otherwise you could hire a trailer and take the stuff to the local council cleansing yard or hire a skip in which to put everything.
